ICT Sociey

ICT Society

A group of leaders managing the internal & external events of the school. One of the most prominent projects undertaken is the annual Compulsory Student Orientation Programme (CSOP). The society also takes part in contributing back to the community with Silver IT and student-led Food from the Heart sessions. The society aims to uphold the values of the school - respect, responsibility, resilience, integrity, compassion and gratitude (R3ICG).

During my time there, I had the privilege to chair the ICT society. With such responsibilities comes waves of challenges waiting to be overcome. During my run, I had gained so much experience in good leadership. I had to balance between objectives and people; ensuring that my committee is well taken care of, while enforcing the datelines and tasks to be done.

I had made many mistakes during my run, which I have reflected upon and made improvements. As I ended my run, I have grown a lot as a leader, and as a person. I began to understand my strengths and weaknesses, as well as the appropriate way to get my message across. I learnt to gain respect from others by understanding their circumstances and proving, with actions, that I stand with them. Truly, a great leader leads by example.

Peer Helpers

Peer Helpers Programme

A group of like-minded individuals dedicated to helping teens and peers in managing their mental health. Our main mission is to provide a listening ear to those in need. From close friends to the lonely classmate, we are trained to manage a plethora of personal issues. We do not provide advice however, and only seek to give a listening ear and prompt questions. Strategy by dispatching ourselves deep into the student population, we hope to spread our help to far to reach people that requires it.

In addition, we also spread awareness by taking part in events such as HealthyU Fiesta and the PH Retreat.

During my time there, I had the opportunity to be the community's publicity head and eventually, the co-chairperson of the pioneering batch of peer helpers. As a publicity head, I had the personal responsibility of managing a small publicity team to come up with creative ways to promote the idea. A social media account was also maintained and each events are posed online for publicity.

The challenge comes with leading a small team with highly limited resources and capabilities. Yet, the ideas generated were innovative and resource efficient.

My run as the co-chairperson also brought me numerous challenges to overcome. Since we are the pioneering batch, it was difficult establishing the organisation from scratch, especially with limited resources that are allocated to us. Unlike society, our organisation had no name and no fame. We had to begin from the very bottom and let our names be known. In the end, the pilot run was a success and the community expanded tremendously, including manpower from the entire polytechnic. The structure had been established, trialed and tested.

I am proud to say that the Peer Helpers has officially been recognised as a co-curricular activity in Ngee Ann Polytechnic as of late 2018. In addition, all schools are required to send representatives for this community to keep helping.
